Stock Trading vs. Poker

Poker players everywhere frequently find themselves having to defend their hobby to friends and family who don’t understand the game. They may view poker as an activity similar to playing the lottery – a game of luck where nearly everyone loses.

While it may be difficult to explain the intricacies of poker to individuals with no concept of the game, it’s pretty easy to compare poker to a much more common and societally acceptable activity – stock trading.

Like poker players, stock traders have to deal with variance. There will be frequent up and down days. An individual stock – or poker session – can leave you with a lot more money, a lot less money, or anywhere in between.

In the long term, however, prudent investors and smart poker players slowly but surely earn more than they lose. Talent and hard work pays off in both activities. The investors who spend the most time researching companies are likely to come out on top, as are the poker players who spend the most time working on strategies to win at the tables.

Additionally, traders and players can both benefit tremendously if they’re smart about dealing with costs. A trader who makes 20 trades a week can save himself $200 if he can reduce his transaction fee from $20/trade to $10/trade.

The concept of reducing costs applies to poker in a different way. For example, a player on William Hill Poker can stand to benefit if he’s smart and reduces the amount he pays the site in rake. Players who do this via use of a William Hill bonus can significantly decrease their cost of playing and save themselves up to $2,000 when getting started on the site.

The bottom line is simple – poker playing has far more in common with stock trading than it does with most other forms of gambling. Explaining this to doubtful friends and family may not get them to start playing, but it may get some of them to be less critical of the game we love.

What are the Real Advantages of Playing Online Poker ?

Contrary to what people believe with regard to online poker and its more traditional format, there are several advantages a person will enjoy by playing the latter. Top of the list is that it allows you the option of playing more online games for less money. If you were to play all the games you play at an online casino, on any traditional casino, you would be shocked at the huge sums of money you would be required to pay. There is even a 100% welcome bonus offered by most casinos for people willing to play online poker, and this allows you to stand a higher chance of winning more prizes.

Poker games are notoriously known for the fact that other players can tell whether you are bluffing or not. However, this is an aspect of the game that is not at play with regard to online poker games. This is a huge advantage to new players since it protects them from getting caught and their bluff being called. Here, other players cannot read your face or body language when you are a new player. It helps the veterans as well to perfect their confidence and other playing strategies. It allows you to develop your skills first before going to a traditional casino to try your luck out at playing poker.

Lastly, you are bound to experience fewer distractions when playing online poker. Because you are within the confines of your house or office, you are bound to have a more enjoyable experience without getting worried about what other players are doing. This allows you the opportunity to focus solely on your cards and strategy on winning where there is no one near you trying to distract you or to talk you out of making a certain move you think to be the best based on your cards. You also are able to avoid falling to the temptation of feeling that you must prove your worth to your fellow opponents.

There are great variety of poker games

There are many variations of poker, most of them played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Texas Hold'em Poker is the version played in many casinos. It is one of the variants of Poker which has grown to become the most popular and exciting of all poker games. It is widely recognized as the most played form of poker all around the world. It is easy to understand and fun to play.

A standard game of Texas Holdem Poker consists of 7 cards dealt to each player. Out of these 7 cards, 2 cards are dealt face down to each player. These cards are known as 2-hole cards or pocket cards. The other five cards are called community cards which everyone can use. Players have to make the best 5-card hand possible out of these total 7 cards.

The following rules will help you understand how to play texas holdem poker:

When the game begins, every player is dealt with one card face up. The player with the highest card gets marked by a dealer button (which is a round disk). It moves clockwise from player to player with each hand. Now, the dealer shuffles a deck of 52 cards.

Before the first cards are dealt, the player to the left of the dealer button posts a bet called "first blind". A blind refers to players putting a predetermined amount of money into the pot before any cards are dealt. Blinds are a compulsory bet to give players an incentive to start betting, so that the winner will always win a pot. Usually the first blind is half of the amount of the minimum blind and the second blind is equal to the minimum bet.

Eg: If the minimum blind is $4, then the first blind will usually be $2, followed by the second blind for $4.

The First Round Of Betting
Now, two cards are dealt called hole cards or pocket cards, which marks the beginning of the first round. This begins with the player to the left of the big blind and moves round the table in a clockwise direction. Depending on the strength of your hole cards, you have the following options:
1. Fold : If you feel your hole cards are not strong enough compared to your opponents, you have the option to discard your hand and quit the current round.
2. Call : If you feel you have good chances of winning, you can match the previous bet and stay in the hand.
3. Raise : If you feel your cards are very strong, you can increase the previous bet made. Your opponents will now have to either match your bet to stay in the hand, or fold and quit the round.
4. Check : When everyone has made their bets and it's your turn again, you have the choice to take no more action and pass the turn to the next opponent. However if the bet has been raised, you cannot check. You must either call or raise to stay in the game. There is a maximum of one bet and three raises in each round of betting.
Eg: In a $10/$20 limit game, the bet is $10 and all raises are increments of $10 in the first and second round.
At the end of the first round of betting, three cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table. These can be used by every player to make their best possible hand along with using their own cards. These communal cards are called "flop".

The Second Round Of Betting
Now you can see five out of your seven cards. The player to the left of the dealer button has to act. He has the options as listed above : fold, bet, call, raise or check. At the end of the second round of betting, a fourth card is dealt face up in the middle of the table. This is an addition to the three communal cards already dealt in the middle of the table, which are to be used by all players. This card is called the "turn".

The Third Round Of Betting
In the third round, the betting must now be based on the higher table limit. This can be explained as follows:
Supposing you are playing a $30/$50 limit game. This means that the minimum buy-in for this table is $30 and the bets will be accordingly placed. Now in the third round of betting, all bets and subsequent raises must now be in increments of $50.
At the end of the third round of betting, the fifth and final communal card is dealt face up in the middle of the table and shared by all the players to make their best possible hand out of the seven cards now available. This card is called the "river".

The Fourth Round Of Betting
The fourth round of betting begins after the "river" is dealt. This is the last and final round of betting. It works in the same way as the previous round. The players have the options to call, raise, check or fold. At the end of the fourth round of betting, the players are left with the final pot in the middle of the table, which is the sum of all the bets placed throughout the four rounds of betting.

Now all players who remain in the game reveal their hands. The player with the highest ranked five card hand is the winner of the round and wins the pot. After the pot has been given to the winner, the dealer button now moves to the left player to the original dealer. Again, the blinds are posted a new round begins.

These basic rules are necessary to understand to get started with the game. However, to be a truly great Texas Hold 'Em Poker player, you must learn to read your opponents to know whether they are bluffing or they really have a strong hand. The more you play, the better you will get!

How to get started with real money poker

A small minority of poker players play because they really love the game by far the majority plays to win real money. Many players use their earnings to supplement their income and have money for the little extras in life. This was true for Matt Drucker who being very good at game would earn a few hundred dollars for an hour’s play in the comfort of his home. You can imagine Matt’s outrage when he logged in one day to find that his favorite poker site was no more. In the last few years the FBI has been seizing sites across the US where online gambling is illegal in several states under the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act). There have been similar issues in some other countries around the world but none as challenging as the U.S.

Fledging sites have had their domain names seized and patrons like Matt have had their gambling accounts frozen with millions of dollars that they could no longer access. There have since been numerous groups that challenged the act as many believe that the concerns about morality are just a ploy to collect tax revenue from U.S. players.

That’s not to say that there are no real money poker sites in the U.S. Although they are far and in between there are some quality sites in the states where there is no clear law declaring the legality of the game. For now online poker can be played by residents in the states of California, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nevada, Oregon, Texas and Wisconsin.

In other places around the world where there are no restrictions on online poker the only concerns that poker players there have are finding a quality site to play and not losing money that they cannot afford to lose. The latter is a real concern especially since the threat of addiction is a problem that a few poker players are faced with. This is a problem that can affect anyone from the successful lawyer to a college student who needs to earn extra money to pay his way through college.

If you’re new to poker online you should do yourself a favor and set aside a poker-specific bankroll. That money should be set aside for playing and ideally you shouldn’t be worried about it if you lose it. If you plan to play with money that you cannot afford to lose then forget about playing. Even very experienced players lose at some time so don’t play with money that you cannot afford to lose.

A seasoned poker player said it this way, “The poker bankroll has to be distinct from regular money mentally and physically. If you win that’s great but if you lose the money you cannot have thoughts about the other uses to which you would have put that money. Being too afraid to lose the money really affects your game of poker.” If you’re experiencing a losing streak bow out of the game and regroup because the next win is not right around the corner.

If your bankroll for playing poker runs out there are still some ways that you can play for real money without compromising your hard earned cash. Here are some ways you can get free poker money online.

Play in Freerolls

One of the easiest ways to get free poker money is to join poker rooms online and participate in freerolls. These are poker tournaments where there is no cost to buy in and you win a sponsored prize or a small cash lump sum. In public freerolls the cash prizes are small compared to paid games and there are usually a lot of people playing so be prepared for that. This is why it pays to search out private freerolls offered by poker forums if you want to try for bigger prizes.

No Deposit Poker Bonuses

Another way to play poker for free and win cash money is to play using a no deposit poker bonus. You can find these by looking for affiliates who offer no deposit bonuses to players who use their affiliate links. With a no deposit bonus you’ll get real money deposited into your account that you can use to play poker. Any money you win will be yours to keep.

Private freerolls, tournaments and no deposit bonuses are just three ways to get started with real money poker without the risks. If you’re fearful about getting your feet wet or need to see the game played live you can always go to a live casino and see the action in all its glory.

A disadvantage of playing online is that in between all the online casinos there also are a few bad apples. Because of this a lot of communities have come to existence such as GPWA, black jack community Ace-ten and more. Such communities can help directing you into the right way to make sure you will always have a great experience.
